Split (Review)

    Spoiler Alert Ahead

So I came into this movie with open arms. Being a fan of M. Nights earlier workings. Well not all of his work, more like the first three or four movies he made. I wanted to give Split a chance. I took my older daughter to it. And let me tell you. It was not what I expected it to be. It was M. Nights best work since Sixth Sense. So let me get this out of the way. This movie isn't a representative for mental illness. It's a fantasy world where a mental illness plays a huge part into a super power. And that's all. This is a super villain movie. And I won't spoil the ending but you will be pleasantly surprised. So let me tell you a little about Split.

Three teenagers, Claire (Haley Lu Richardson), Marcia (Jessica Sula) and outsider Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), are kidnapped by "Dennis", one of the 23 split personalities inhabiting the body of Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy), a victim of childhood abuse with severe dissociative identity disorder, and held captive in a cellar. Kevin's psychiatrist, Dr. Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley), who believes that in such cases the psychological unbalance can cause physiological changes, is concerned to find an email from Kevin's dominant personality, "Barry", asking for a meeting.

Over the years Kevin has been treated, he appears to be stable: all of his personalities sit in chairs in a room, waiting for their turn "in the light" (controlling the body), while "Barry" controls who gets to go in the light. Two personalities, "Dennis" and "Patricia", are kept out of the light. In Dennis's case, this is because he likes to watch young girls dance naked, and he has both violent tendencies and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Dr. Fletcher, through her studies, has reached a conclusion that people like Kevin can overcome their disabilities by moving to different personalities. Later in the movie in an attempt to explain his new personality, Kevin reminds her about a blind girl with split personality disorder who could see when she went into another personality. She attends a medical conference online and tries to make her point; this could be a solution to all the disabilities.

    Rated 9 - 10

I don't wanna spoil everything. But Split is a must see. M. Night is back and I'm hoping he stays. I always loved his twist in movies. Some of them not as good as others. But it was nice to be surprised for once. The movies nowadays hold your hands through the whole movie. I wanna be surprised and even intrigued when you finally figure everything out. Split is a must see from this UGeek.
