Attending a Con, Stuff that you can do!

  • Cons go all year around but there is usually a few big ones you want to attend. One of those in case for me is always Phoenix Comicon, aka Phxcc. Phoenix Comicon takes place May 25-28th this year.

The convention takes place in the heart of downtown Phoenix, and over the years it has grown exponentially. So, here are a few things I do when attending the con.

    1. I prepare: If I am in costume/cosplay, I try my best to bring a kit for any mishaps that may happen that I need to fix my costume/cosplay. There are bathrooms and panels to stop by where you can fix up your piece easily.

    2. Bring a camera, there are great costumes out there to be seen and fun times to be had. Be courteous though and ask for a picture, most cosplayers, people in costume, will be glad to get their picture taken. I know I am very happy when people ask for a picture with me because it means that my costume was appreciated!

    3. Make sure you have money! The vendor hall is huge and has something for everyone! If you like certain anime/shows/games and there is a fandom behind it, you can be sure there is product out there waiting for you to buy it. Good news is a lot of vendors accept cards now too! So even if you forget to pull dollars out from the bank, you still can purchase a lot from vendors by card. Wares go from licensed items to artists drawing up freelance work!

    4. T.V. show actors, Anime/Video Game Voice Actors, and Comic Artist/Writers are all over the convention. Some of your favorite actors ever are available for signings, photo ops, and even panels where you can easily ask them questions. They do cost for meeting and photo ops but it is well worth it! I met Nolan North and Troy Baker last year and got a killer picture taken with them.

    5. Panels: Ever wanted to learn about your favorite shows/anime/games? Ever wanted to find other fans who were interested in the same things you are? Panels are a great way to mingle. Even if mingling isn't your thing, you can go to a panel of your favorite show/anime/game and not feel awkward because of it. Panels are a lot of fun and expand your knowledge of your favorite things or help you learn about new things you have been curious about. Also actors tend to have panels as well so you can go and learn more about them and their experiences on their road of acting.

    6. Though I have never been, there are after hour parties that go on and dances. They look a lot of fun but I have no experience with them.

    7. Anime/Show cafes: These are fun because they have cafes of your favorite show or anime where your favorite characters serve you drink and eat while chatting with you or entertaining you by acting, singing, dancing depending on the cafe. There is a small fee to attend these though.

    8. Masquerade: Last year for comic-con was the first time I attended one. I really want to make this a thing each year because it was amazing. People dressed in cosplay go on stage and act out a scene, or sing, or dance to get named top of their class and win prizes depending on how well they do. It is free and a must see!

    9. Opening/Closing con ceremony. I have not been to the opening but I have been to several con closings and they are well worth it. They go over their attendance and their outlook for the next year. They thank you for attending the con and appreciate the work from all their workers and volunteers. They also ask you what you liked/disliked about the con. Also, there is swag to be had. I have gotten lanyards and old passes with cool art on them. Also, have received a few cool Phxcc buttons for attending.

    10. Last but not least, make sure you are well rested and hydrated. Phoenix Comicon is HUGE and there is a lot of walking involved. Also with it being held pre-summer in Arizona, it is already hot for anyone who isn't used to Arizona weather. So, by all means, make sure you have enough water or make sure to get water every chance you get. If you are in costume/cosplay, I can promise that you will be a sweet factory!

Other than all that, enjoy the con and find what fits you best. There is a lot to see and do, and I only touched on the stuff I tend to attend or see when I go. If you do go though and spy me wandering around, then please say hi and maybe snap a picture with me! I have some cosplays in the works right now. My main one is Ruby Rose from RWBY so if you happen to see me wandering around, then please say hi! Until then, Ugeek On!
